In April, I move to the Marais, metro Arts-et-Métiers. I’m getting to know lines 3 and 11. There’s a Naturalia, a Marché U, a café, a tobacconist. A guy I know said I could take his brother’s spare room, it’s that kind of deal. We agreed on six months. I buy him Whiskey, I pay the cleaning lady. We don’t cross paths much. I leave before him in the morning, I always wake up early, I put on a pair of jeans, I go to the Roi de Pique, I order a coffee, I read a copy of Libération, I wait for him to leave for work, I go back up. In the evenings I often go out for dinner, which is a useless exercise because so does he. That’s what I say to myself every time I come back around midnight and he’s not there. If I’d have known he wasn’t going to be there, I wouldn’t have blown twenty euros on some shitty terrace, telling my life story to people I couldn’t care less about. During the day he’s at work. Sometimes I see the cleaning lady. She comes on Tuesdays and Fridays just before lunch. She always says, You are nice, Madame Constance. It reminds me of my childhood. She talks, she complains, I say, Yes, yes, I pick up my things and go swimming. I go to Les Halles. It’s more expensive but the showers are big and so are the swimming lanes, plus it’s always open. I walk there. Seven minutes, I counted. I like it when he goes away on the weekend. Sometimes I’m the one who goes away. To book fairs outside of Paris. I take trains, I stay in hotels. Sometimes I go to my dad’s or one of the girls’. We usually manage to stay out of each other’s way.
